Davey Boy Down
Hey, for those who haven't heard. Davey Boy Krech has been in the ICU, actually the SICU, for Surgical Intensive Care Unit) for 2 days. I went to see him yesterday at around 5:00, and although he looked terrible all tubed up lying in the bed like that, he felt better. He was a little foggy, but he had no pain. Epiglottitis is swelling around the epiglottis, which is that flap of skin that covers your windpipe when you swallow. He must have gotten some infection that was swelling so much, it was obstructing 50% of his windpipe. The crazy thing was how fast the onset was. He was just feeling a little tired Sunday afternoon, but by 10:30, he had violent chills & his temperature spiked up to 102 in an hour and a half. His fever broke, but that's when the swelling started, so much so that he said he needed to go to the hospital. Dave never complains, so I knew he must be in agony. (The last time he told me he needed to go to the "doctor," he was so dehydrated, he needed 3 bags of saline.) While we were there, the swelling kept getting worse. So they took him to the OR & intubated him. They said that it was easy to intubate him, which was a relief, and they are pushing antibiotics (sorry if I'm using too much "Grey's Anatomy" lingo) to kill the infection, & thus reduce the swelling, but I probably won't be able to take him home until Wed. And then, I'm not sure how much recovery he will need. We were hoping to leave for Stacy's house on Friday, but now I'm not sure. Thanks again for your concern; I'll keep you posted. Love you all, MA
